Explore Cocora Valley

Cocora Valley (Valle de Cocora) is a natural treasure in Quindío, Colombia, located about a 25-30 minute drive north of Salento. It is famous for the world's tallest palm trees—Colombia's national tree, the Wax Palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), which averages 50-60 meters in height. Serving as a buffer zone for Los Nevados National Natural Park, Cocora Valley offers breathtaking cloud forest landscapes, highly valuable scientific ecosystems, and multiple high-altitude hiking trails. It is an excellent place to observe endemic Andean flora and fauna, such as hummingbirds and Andean Condors, making it a non-profit natural landscape with immense ecological and educational value.

Preparation & Ecology

  • 🚙 Transport: Take a traditional WWII-era Willys Jeep from the main square (Plaza de Bolívar) in Salento. The ride takes about 25-30 minutes to the valley entrance. The first jeeps usually depart around 6:00 AM.
  • 🥾 Extreme Mud Warning: Due to year-round rainfall, the trails are often extremely muddy and slippery. It is highly recommended to rent specialized rubber mud boots at the valley entrance or in Salento.
  • ️ Weather Alert: Regardless of the season, there is a high probability of fog and rain after midday. It is essential to start early and bring rain gear.

Flora & Fauna

  • 🌴 Wax Palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense): Colombia's national tree, averaging 50-60 meters tall. Note that it is currently endangered as cattle grazing prevents the natural regeneration of seedlings.
  • Andean Hummingbirds: At the Acaime hummingbird sanctuary, visitors can observe various wild hummingbirds endemic to the Andes up close.
  • 🦅 Andean Condors: One of the largest flying birds in the world, occasionally spotted in the high-altitude areas of the valley.
  • ♻️ Leave No Trace: Please stay on designated trails, do not leave trash behind, and help protect this fragile alpine ecosystem.

Trail Guide

There are two main ways to explore Cocora Valley. Please choose based on your fitness level and time:

1

1. The Full Loop (Highly recommended counter-clockwise): Approx. 12-15 km | 5-6 hours | 600-800m elevation gain.

2

Highlights: Starting from the Blue Gate on the right of the entrance, you will first traverse the dense cloud forest, crossing five or six suspension bridges over rapid rivers. Midway, you can detour to the Acaime hummingbird sanctuary (extra fee required).

3

This is followed by a steep climb to the highest point, Finca La Montaña, before descending to the spectacular Wax Palm forest (Bosque de Palmas) for a perfect finish.

4

2. The Short Route (Clockwise): Approx. 2-3 km | 1.5-2 hours.
