Salento & Cocora Valley

Cocora Valley is a highlight of a much larger region: Colombia's Eje Cafetero (Coffee Axis). This guide connects Salento with the towns and cities of Quindío, Risaralda and Caldas.
Also known as the Coffee Triangle, the Eje Cafetero spans the departments of Quindío (capital Armenia), Risaralda (capital Pereira) and Caldas (capital Manizales). Its green mountains, coffee plantations, colourful colonial towns and cloud forests were recognised as a UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape in 2011.

Nicknamed 'the Illuminated Hill', with a viewpoint, cobbled streets and cafés overlooking the coffee landscape. About 20-30 minutes by car from Salento.
The departmental capital and an area of theme and traditional coffee-farm attractions (such as the National Coffee Park), close to El Edén airport.
Further north, Pereira is the gateway through Matecaña airport; Santa Rosa de Cabal offers thermal springs and Manizales closes the triangle with Andean views.
By air, the closest airports are El Edén (Armenia), Matecaña (Pereira) and La Nubia (Manizales). Frequent buses connect the cities and towns of the axis, and Willys jeeps leave Salento for Cocora Valley. This is a mountainous region: roads are winding and journeys between towns range from 30 minutes to two hours.
Day 1 — Salento: hike the full Cocora Valley circuit in the morning, then explore the town (Plaza de Bolívar) in the afternoon.
Day 2 — Filandia and surroundings: viewpoints, cafés and a traditional coffee farm (book in advance).
Day 3 — Armenia or Pereira: theme parks or your return connection.
